Social workers might arguably be one of the least appreciated — in the United States at least — amongst those who are in a profession that looks after the overall well-being of other people.
Ask several people what social workers do and you’ll probably get different answers. Although at the core of the profession, they are agents of positive social change. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data suggests a jobs growth rate of 16% in the period 2016 to 2026, inclusive. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) alone employees several thousand social workers. They also make up a large segment of providers of mental health services in the country.
Potential careers in social work practice include, but are not limited to, the following:
- case manager
- child welfare and family caseworker
- clinical mental health social worker
- clinical practitioner
- community leader
- counselor
- forensic social work practitioner
- geriatric social worker
- healthcare social worker
- marriage and family therapist
- medical social worker
- nonprofit leader
- program planner
- researcher/grant writer
- school social worker
- substance abuse counselor
This article looks at options for online master’s degrees in social work (MSW). Such a master’s could potentially earn a social worker as much an extra 25% yearly over someone who only holds a bachelor’s in social work (BSW). When checking these colleges, verify that, if you are non-resident, that the colleges you apply to can serve online students in your home state.
Ranking Methodology
This article’s data is sourced from the NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) CollegeNavigator website and the IPEDS DataCenter (both maintained by the U.S. Dept. of Education). This ranking is based on the most-recently-available average in-state graduate tuition (plus mandatory fees) for each institution, and in which case may not reflect current rates for a specific program. Also note: some Master’s programs below are by default part-time; so tuition may appear to be lower for some schools than actually is the case for full-time studies. Please verify costs for your choice of P/T or F/T studies or track options before applying to any of these programs.
- Step 1: Query NCES for graduate degrees in social work — public and private nonprofit institutions. NCES does not distinguish graduate program offerings as being master’s or doctorate.
- Step 2: Filter out non-U.S. listings such as for protectorates including Guam, Puerto Rico, etc.
- Step 3: Query IPEDS DataCenter data for U.S. institutions offering a distance master’s degree in social work. This data set allows for selection of master’s programs, unlike NCES.
- Step 4: Combine the two data sets, sort by average graduate cost (in-state tuition plus mandatory fees).
- Step 5: Manually verify each college actually has an online (Internet-based) master’s degree in social work.
- Step 6: Adjust tuition+fee values for the first 25 selections, if newer data available on school site, and re-sort by ascending values.
