Picking the best affordable Bachelor’s in Nutrition degree programs can take a big bite out of your future loan debt. Cheap nutrition degree options put their tuition on a diet to lose excess expenses. Nutrition majors can then focus on promoting better food choices instead of worrying about finances. Undergraduate nutrition courses lead to an in-demand medical career helping patients plan nourishing meals. According to the Health & Human Services Department, more than 78 million adults and 12.5 million kids are obese today. Treating obesity-related conditions costs about $344 billion annually. Americans eat an average 3,700 calories each day. Adults take in a whopping 3,400 milligrams of salt every 24 hours. Fat consumption per capita has also increased by nearly 30 pounds since 1980. CNBC reports that average life expectancy has dropped again to 78.6 years. Nutrition plays a big role in many surging illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, and even some cancers. Getting an affordable degree in nutrition prepares you for influencing people’s food intake and physical activity to protect their well-being.
Our Methodology
The AS Staff decided to research low-cost nutrition degree programs that teach future dietitians healthy lifestyle habits. We started with the U.S. Department of Education’s College Navigator database. Here we browsed for majors in the clinical nutrition, human nutrition, and nutrition science categories. We checked the boxes for bachelor’s degrees at public and private four-year institutions. Our results formed a large pool of 180 potential colleges. Then, we meticulously searched each university’s website for tuition information. Our team recorded the average in-state and out-of-state costs for full-time bachelor’s students in 2019-20. Though both are mentioned below, we only used the in-state price for our ranking. Cheap in-state rates of $7,500 and under had the biggest priority. We gave high-value nutrition degree paths these points by dollar amount.

Next, the Affordable Schools team refined our list of best-value nutrition degree programs based on student-faculty ratio. We gleaned this ratio from the National Center for Education Statistics. Student-faculty ratios are proportions calculated by dividing the number of pupils and teachers. An average student-faculty ratio of 10:1 says there are 10 undergrads per every one professor. The higher the first number goes, the more students you can expect in each class. Low student-faculty ratios keep classes small for nutrition majors to truly engage. Small, interactive courses lead to more stimulating discussions and hands-on nutrition lab projects. Colleges with low student-faculty ratios have less big lectures nutrition majors will get lost in. Professors have fewer undergrads on their roster to provide more personalized support. We again awarded each cost-effective nutrition degree points for student-faculty ratio.

Lastly, the AS Staff sought out affordable colleges for nutrition degree tracks with good student outcomes. The United States is facing a college dropout epidemic. The U.S. News & World Report found that 3.9 million undergrads leave college without a diploma yearly. College dropouts do gain one thing though – average student loan debt of $7,174. Paying off tuition bills without a bachelor’s-level job and salary is extremely hard. Colleges with large numbers of dropouts are failing their students. Many lack the resources and services to keep learners thriving. That’s why we prioritized schools with good graduation rates. We got the average six-year graduation rate from the NCES. High graduation percentages earned the most points for their successful student environment. We compiled all three point totals together for up to 11 points. The 50 biggest scores were chosen as our top-value nutrition degree programs.
