25 Online Private Nonprofit Bachelor’s Colleges with the Least Four-Year Tuition Change

Utica College (UC, est. 1946) offered the largest tuition drop of institutions in this list, with a decline of $12,804 over the AY (academic years) 2013-14 to 2016-17. The latter year’s tuition marked a 42% drop over the previous year, falling to just under $20K. The college, based in Utica, New York, can boast a 95% level of students receiving direct aid, and a 92% rate (Class of 2016) for grads either in jobs or grad school within one year. Both Homeland Security and the NSA have jointly designated UC as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Education (CAE IA/CD), and is a pilot school of the Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3). Awards received by UC include those from Victory Media (Military Friendly School 2017) and U.S. News & World Report (Top 200 Regional Universities).

UC offers 90+ academic programs from bachelor’s to doctorate level degrees, plus undergrad and graduate minors and certificates. Lesley University (LU, est. 1909) ranks second in this list, having a $6,500 drop in tuition between AY (academic years) 2013-14 to 2016-17, inclusive. LU, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, claims financial aid is awarded to 95% of first-time undergrad students, and that 96% of students who graduate are either employed or pursuing advanced studies. The university ranked #12 in the state and #181 nationally in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges list.

LU offers degrees (associate’s to doctorate level) and both undergrad and graduate certificate programs. Of the over 30 undergrad programs, six are online bachelor’s options: Bachelor of Science in Design for User Experience (BSDUE); BS Business Management (BSBM); BS in Human Services (BSHS); Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Humanities (BAIH); BA Liberal Studies (BALS); BA in Psychology (BAP). Graduation requirements include a minimum 120 credits, and LU accepts up to 90 transfer credits. Students also have online professional development course options from which to choose.

National Louis University (NLU, est. 1886) earns the #3 spot in our list of least-changing college tuition with a drop of $5,535 over the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17. Based in Chicago, Illinois, the university has enjoyed increased growth in terms of student applications over 10 years (2006 to 2016), and ranked #2 in the country by both MSN Money and 24/7 Wall St. Professional networking site LinkedIn ranked NLU in several topical categories for Chicago, for career realization — that is, students finding jobs in their field. NLU ranked from #1, 2, 3, and 4 in various Education subjects, and #13 in Health Services Administration. Nationally, NLU ranked #5-28 in eight Education-related categories. The university caters to non-traditional students (average age of undergrad students is 34, and 36 for grads), with 91% being part-time, and female students outweighing males at 80% to 20% ratio. The student population is also fairly diverse, for which it won a spot in U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of the top 25 most diverse national universities 2013.

NLU offers over 50 programs in the form of bachelor’s through doctorate level degrees, plus a selection of graduate certificate programs. IU, based in Salt Lake City, Utah, is the online division of Stevens-Henager College and has been offering distance education for nearly 40 years. It has a special non-grades-based Your Future scholarship program that might pay up to 100% of tuition for qualified undergrad students, through their Good Neighbor Initiative. Students who are military personnel, and their spouses, might also qualify for various forms of financial aid.

IU offers associate’s through master’s level degrees. WGU, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, delivers all of its academic programs online. The university’s programs are VA-benefits-approved, and it has earned a designation of “military-friendly” for multiple years, in college rankings lists by several publishers including Victory Media. Spouses of active-duty, reserve and National Guard service members may be eligible for both tuition assistance and military scholarships as well.

Geneva College (GC, est. 1848) tuition climbed $460 over the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. Almost 100% of its students receive some form of financial aid. GC, based in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, is a top Christian institution (Reform) that integrates faith into its programs — some of which have achieved top rankings over multiple years. This includes rankings from college review publishers such as U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and other organizations. Categories include top regional universities North (#3 in 2018 by U.S. News), best colleges, best value, best for veterans, and topical rankings such as undergrad Engineering, amongst others. The college claims 96% of their graduates find jobs or are in graduate studies within a year after graduation.

GC offers associate’s through master’s level degrees, including over 40 undergrad majors and programs. Mercy, based in Dobbs Ferry, New York, is recognized as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE). It has a significant leaning towards female student enrollment, at a ratio of 71% female to 29% male, but ranked in recent years for high racial diversity amongst American colleges by two publications/ organizations: Diverse: Issues In Higher Education Magazine (top 100 minority Degree Producers) and U.S. News & World Report (USNWR). University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH, est. 1920) tuition increased $875 over the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. UNOH, based in Lima, Ohio, states that more than 90% of students receive some form of financial aid (including grants, loans and scholarships). According to UNOH, 86% of graduating students either find work within six months or continue studies. (Note: 82% of current students are in diploma or associate’s degree programs.) Students who are active military personnel (or a spouse) should contact the UNOH Military Relations Department for assistance on various student matters including financial aid, credit transfer, etc.

UNOH offers associate’s through master’s level degrees and a selection of undergrad certificate programs. Of these, 11 are online bachelor’s options. It was ranked by Washington Monthly in 2017 as a top colleges for adult learners (#1 Southern California, #18 national), and a military friendly institution by both Military Advanced Education (America’s Top Military Friendly Colleges) and Victory Media/ G.I. According to U.S. News & World Report (USNWR), ERAU’s Worldwide division is the #1 college in the U.S. for Online Bachelor’s Programs for 2017, and the #1 Best Online Bachelor’s Degrees for Veterans 2016 (plus other ranking positions in additional year on both lists). Huntington University (HU, est. 1897) tuition increased $1360 in the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. HU, based in Huntington, Indiana, maintains the motto “Christ. Scholarship. Service.” As of Fall 2011, they offer a significant per-credit hour discount for active military service members. As well, they claim around 90% of students receive some form of financial aid, and 97% of graduates each year find work within six months. The university has earned an extensive number of recognitions over nearly two decades. University of Northwestern-St Paul (UNWSP, est. 1902) tuition increased $1440 in the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. Based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, UNWSP integrates a Christian focus into its programs. It is a Military Friendly School as per its recognition by Victory Media over the past four years, including 2017. The university was ranked as #10 of 24 in the state for selectivity of admissions, as well as #13 Best Regional Colleges Midwest in 2015 by U.S. News & World Report.

UNWSP offers over 75 undergraduate majors (associate’s and bachelor’s degrees) and a half-dozen master’s programs, plus undergrad and graduate certificate programs. Brescia University (Brescia, est. 1925) tuition increased $1460 in the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. Additionally, Brescia, based in Owensboro, Kentucky, recently announced a tuition freeze for four years — until 2022 — for BUOnline and online undergraduate courses. This and other factors have earned the university recognition in college rankings published by several organizations, including: U.S. News & World Report (Best Regional Colleges in the South 2017, and multiple other years); Washington Monthly (2017 College Guide – Top 25 Best Bang for the Buck Southern Colleges, Top 150 Baccalaureate Colleges, America’s Best Colleges for Adult Learners); Princeton Review (Best Regional Colleges Southeast – 2018 and other years); Victory Media (Military Friendly Schools – multiple years); and others.

Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been designated a Military Friendly School by Victory Media across multiple years — partly for its Yellow Ribbon program that reduces tuition, and scholarships for qualified active military personnel and spouses. The institute got its start as a men’s engineering college, which is reflected in the fact that Engineering and Business are the most popular degree programs, jointly making up more than half of enrolled students (27% and 25% of students, respectively). IIT has been recognized by PayScale.com as a “top university in the region” and #90 nationally for the ROI enjoyed by students after graduation, in terms of average work salary compared to total cost of education.

Saint Leo University (SLU, est. 1889) tuition increased $1520 in the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. Based in Saint Leo, Florida, SLU is a Catholic institution — the first in the state — but welcomes students of all faiths. In fact, Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine declared the university in their top 100 colleges for minority students. SLU also received recognition for its services to military personnel from several publishers/ organizations. Victory Media declared the university as a Military Friendly School across multiple years, a 2017 Military Spouse Friendly School, and a Top 10 Gold-level Military Friendly School. Military Times also recognized SLU in two categories: Best Colleges 2018 – #8 Online and Nontraditional Schools (and in previous years in the former “Best for Vets” list). Concordia University-Saint Paul (CSP, est. 1893) tuition increased $1550 in the four academic years AY2013-14 through AY2016-17, inclusive. CSP, based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, is a member of the prestigious Concordia University System. It claims a placement rate of over 94% post-graduation (undergrads). A participant in the Yellow Ribbon program to serve veterans, the university also serves active military personnel, and was designated a Military Friendly School 2016 by Victory Media. Up to 32 military credits can be transferred towards a CSP bachelor’s degree (contact school for eligible credits and how to earn these CLEP/ DANTES credits.) A $2,000 military scholarship may be available to veterans and active service members who are not receiving other military-related benefits. CSP also caters to adult students, with Washington Monthly recognizing CSP in their “Top College for Adult Learners” list, ranking at #3 in 2017, and #4 in 2016. The online offering is recognized by U.S. News & World Report, making their Best Online Bachelor’s Programs ranking list in multiple years.
