One thing is certain: Marketing skills are valuable in most industries since most companies or organizations sell something — be it products or services. Thus, studying Marketing can open up opportunities in nearly any industry, even if you have only a working knowledge of that industry. For example, you do not have to be an athlete to do sports marketing, nor a hotelier to do hospitality marketing. Understanding the principles of marketing, how to do market research, how to price products and services, how to place them, promote them, advertise and distribute them — that is essentially the same methodology regardless of industry. That is what a certificate, diploma, or degree program in Marketing can teach you.
Marketing is a multi-disciplinary field, and quite possibly one of the broadest in that sense. Since it involves the act of convincing other human beings to offer up their hard-earned money for the products or services being promoted, Marketing is in a sense an aggregation of “applied everything” — applied math and statistics, applied psychology, applied sociology, applied business, applied law, applied cultural anthropology, storytelling, game playing, and the list goes on. Thus, Marketing has the potential to be a very fulfilling career choice, most especially if you enjoy constantly learning and also being creative.
If you are interested in a career in Marketing and are looking for academic programs, we’ve compiled a list of online degrees (and certificates and diplomas) in this subject — listed alphabetically by institution. Given the number of colleges and institutions offering them, online degree programs have been gaining in respect and popularity in the past few years. They are particularly suitable for students who have other obligations in life that reduce their ability to attend classes on campus — though some programs do have some on-campus residency requirements. (Some students also chose to take a mix of on-campus and online courses within a program.) Finding these online programs can be very time-consuming, so hopefully this online degree guide for Marketing study programs will be of high value to you, in helping you find a school and program focusing on your Marketing-related interests.
In selecting a Marketing study program, keep in mind that Marketing skills are in high demand, and that’s probably before we factor in the need for these skills for companies that rely on online revenue from the Web. Internet Marketing is a fairly handy skill set, even for businesses that have an online presence but make most/all of their revenue offline. Or you might already have a traditional Marketing diploma or degree and wish to enhance your skills with a degree or just a certificate in Internet Marketing.
Jobs data backs up the claim of high demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), job growth expectations between 2012 and 2022 is 32% increase for Market Research Analysts (specifically) and 12% for Advertising, Promotions and Marketing Managers. This is compared to the national average in the U.S. of 11% for the same time period for all jobs. In addition to these two occupations/ categories, both profiles in the BLS OOH list related occupations and job growth expectations. Also, for reader convenience, we have aggregated all the different possible careers mentioned for Marketing graduates in the Web pages of the schools listed below. We’ve aggregated over 100 job titles and published them at the very end of this online degree guide for Marketing study programs.
Notes:
- This guide is a work-in-progress. Check back soon for another alphabetic block of schools.
- Colleges and universities may represent an academic program as being “fully/ 100% online.” However, some use this designation even when they have an in-person requirement for coursework such as a final exam. In some cases, students will be able to conduct this exam at a testing center local to them, rather than having to go on-campus.
- As hybrid programs (partly online, partly on-campus) are fairly common, we have included them in the list of programs and schools but indicated when they are hybrid.
- Some programs might be fully online but be “degree completion.” E.g., the online portion is for upper-division courses, such as for a bachelor’s degree — with the lower division courses completed as an associate’s degree, possibly at another institution and/or possibly completed on campus.
- Please check the accreditation of an institution before registering. Some institutions listed may not have regional accreditation. Be sure that your credits at such institutions can be transferred elsewhere, if the need arises.
- Check if you can be admitted from your home state. Institutions may not have permission to admit students living in certain states because of specific regulations.
- Because some students take online programs from the same state as the institution in question, we chose to use the average net yearly price, indicated as “Net Cost/yr.” NCES.ed.gov’s educational data defines this as being an average for all undergrad students for an institution and consists of the average of tuition cost minus scholarship/grant funds plus fees, books, and cost of living expenses. So it is entirely possible that what it costs you to complete an online program is different than listed. Rates change yearly as well.
- Average net price/year refers to average undergraduate program costs. Graduate program costs may differ. Online program fees may apply, and costs, in general, are subject to change.
- If a program is listed in error or is no longer available, please contact us for correction.

Online Marketing Degree Overview
Marketing studies come in a number of flavors, typically through the Business department/ division of a college/ university. Sometimes they are part of a Business Administration or Management programs, and sometimes independent certificate or degree programs.
Online Marketing Certificate Programs
Online certificate programs allow students to narrowly focus on an area of interest. Of the schools listed above that are offering certificates, traditional marketing and related topics (sales, advertising, management) are more common options than Internet Marketing. The latter is still a young sub-field, if not exactly in its infancy, although we feel such certificates will become more commonly available in the future. Marketing certificates are for various types of students. Some are for Marketing students, some for non-marketing business students, and even some for non-business students who want to supplement their career skills. There are also undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and graduate study levels for certificates (as well as for degrees.) Certificate programs vary in length, dependent on the number of courses in the curriculum — typically 5-8 courses, with a few at 18 courses.
Online Associate’s Degree in Marketing
Typically, associate’s degrees are broad in subject matter, allowing students who have not picked a major to explore topics. For students who know they are interested in business but have not yet selected marketing, an associate’s degree in business can be the stepping stone to completing a bachelor’s in marketing later. For students who already know that they are interested in marketing, specifically choosing an online associate’s degree in marketing (or in business, with marketing specialization) is more useful career-wise. Of the schools listed above that are offering associate’s degrees in Marketing or related subjects, the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Marketing seems most common, though Business-Administration-related degrees with marketing courses are also fairly frequent. Associate’s degrees typically take two years to complete, although, for online equivalents, many schools allow students to complete them at their own pace, within reason.
Online Bachelor’s in Marketing
While an associate’s degree in Marketing or a closely-related discipline is enough to find employment in Marketing-related roles, a bachelor’s degree is recommended for a longer-lasting career with advancement opportunities. The most common type of online bachelor’s in a marketing-related topic appears to a BA or BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration), although several schools offer a BS in Marketing or even Internet Marketing. Some offer Marketing with Management studies. BBA programs, while usually broadly about Business Administration, typically have a concentration or specialization in Marketing. The majority of these online bachelor’s in Marketing-related disciplines are sufficient for finding a long-term career in marketing and related work. Depending on your program’s full course curriculum, this includes business administration, advertising, communications, entrepreneurship, management, and other related business disciplines. As for associate’s degrees, online bachelor’s degrees are sometimes structured to give students the option to complete them at their own pace. However, four years is the typical program length, with two years for programs that build on a student’s existing associate’s degree.
Online Marketing Master’s Degree
A Master’s degree in Marketing-related topics can serve several purposes. It can be a key to teaching, or a means for increased work opportunities. Of the master’s programs listed above, the MBA is a fairly frequently available choice. Typically, MBAs are broad in curriculum, as with BBAs, although Marketing concentrations/ specializations are the options offered to customize the degree. For people who have a general business bachelor’s degree (or even a specialized non-marketing business degree), a Master’s in Marketing can supplement your knowledge, help with a business-related career change, open up pathways to managerial or executive roles, and just as importantly, give you a broader perspective about business in general. Master’s degrees typically two years in length, though for online master’s, the time frame may be shorter, and at the student’s own pace.
Online Marketing Doctoral Degree
Online doctorates in Marketing or related disciplines are the least offered degrees so far. In the A-F block of schools listed above, only one school, Capella University, offers program: a DBA (Doctorate in Business Administration) and a Ph.D. in Business Management, both with a Marketing specialization option. Typically, students take doctorates as a path towards teaching, although other career options including market research, writing, and consulting, amongst others. Online doctoral degrees can take between 4-5 years to complete, sometimes longer. While coursework is possibly fast-tracked thanks to online course options, research-based doctorates take time for research and dissertation writing and presentation, especially if you are juggling other life commitments such as family, military duty, a job, or a combination of these. Professional doctorates, which often have a Capstone project or final proctored exam, might potentially be entirely fast-tracked. Prerequisite for a doctorate in marketing is a bachelor’s degree (usually in business or marketing) and a master’s degree (MBA or marketing).
Marketing Classes Online
A number of colleges and universities offer MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and other digital course formats for business topics, though less often specifically for marketing. Though scan sites like Coursera.org and you will find the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business’ Introduction to Marketing course available free, as part of their business Specialization series. You can even pay a nominal fee per course and receive an official certificate of completion (assuming you complete the courses). Several other business schools also offer Marketing courses on Coursera.org, including a few in other languages. For example, Northwestern University offers a six-course specialization (including a capstone project, for those who pay for the certificate) in Social Media Marketing. Schools also offer digital course content through their specific edX website, or through Apple iTunes University. Other online sources are available as well. These course options are particularly useful for exploring whether or not you want to commit to a Marketing degree. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign goes so far as to allow those who complete their business course specialization on Coursera to apply to their iMBA online MBA program.
