Students seeking to maximize their transfer credits and receive a well-rounded education should look for the best affordable online Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts and Sciences degree programs. Cheap liberal arts and science degree majors provide an in-depth overview of the humanities, such as history, sociology, philosophy, and literature. Liberal arts education challenges pupils to think critically about diverse topics and communicate their unique perspectives. Despite popular belief, liberal arts colleges provide useful degrees with good job placement and salary potential. In 2018, Inside Higher Ed reported that 82 percent of liberal arts graduates were employed with median pay of $55,000. The Association of American Colleges & Universities found that four out of five employers want liberal arts students. In fact, 93 percent of surveyed employers require the “soft” skills liberal arts programs develop. One-third of Fortune 500 CEOs, including Susan Wojcicki and Howard Schultz, have liberal arts degrees. Online affordable colleges for liberal arts and sciences degree options make broadening your knowledge easier 24/7.
Our Methodology
To celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month this October, Affordable Schools researched the online best-value liberal arts and sciences degree options for students committed to the classics. We started by consulting the United States Department of Education’s NCES College Navigator. We input advanced search criteria to locate generic four-year bachelor’s majors in liberal arts and sciences. After checking the box for distance education, we gathered an initial pool of 125 online universities. We exported the list into a spreadsheet and compared the latest 2018-19 tuition figures. Our team focused on each liberal arts college’s average in-state cost. Out-of-state fees weren’t weighed but are mentioned below. We sorted the online schools by full-time pricing and kept the 50 cheapest. We gave the most cost-effective liberal arts and sciences degree programs up to five points based on affordability.
Points:
Under $7,500: 5 Points
$7,500 to $15,000: 3 Points
$15,001 and Up: 1 Point
Next, the AS Staff recruited the National Center for Education Statistics again to locate average student-faculty ratios for 2019. We decided to give preference to online affordable colleges for liberal arts and sciences degree majors with 10:1 or lower student-faculty ratios from NCES. We strongly believe that small liberal arts courses are essential for interactive dialogue and debates. Low student-faculty ratios mean less competition for professor access and more personalized mentoring. Liberal arts majors can build more camaraderie with teachers and fellow online students for networking. Close-knit courses ensure you’re not just a face lost in the crowd and overlooked. Professors really know your unique interests to suggest better internships and research opportunities for your resume. We awarded one to three points to each economical liberal arts and sciences degree for student-faculty ratios to ensure your engagement.
Points:
10:1 or Less: 3 Points
11:1 to 15:1: 2 Points
Greater Than 15:1: 1 Point
Ultimately, Affordable Schools knows that top-value liberal arts and sciences degree options online are only worthy of your time if you graduate though. According to Forbes, the current degree completion rate in America is just 57 percent. Dropping out leaves former students strapped with tuition debt without any bachelor’s degree benefits. We want to give you the best chance at finishing your online degree in at least four to six years. That’s why we used the College Navigator again to determine average graduation rates. Higher graduation rates often correlate to a better quality of learning, support services, and retention tactics. Bigger percentages out of 100 suggest more students are satisfied with the online study environment. Our last rubric rewarded up to three points for graduation rate. We tallied the totals to list our 50 online affordable liberal arts and sciences degree choices from least to most points.
Points:
More than 50 Percent: 3 Points
Between 30 and 50 Percent: 2 Points
Less than 30 Percent: 1 Point
