If you are interested in cybersecurity and you are looking for the best affordable online Bachelor’s in Computer and Information Systems Security degrees, you have come to the right place. As cyberattacks increase in scope and frequency, so does the demand for qualified, knowledgeable and skilled computer and information systems security specialists. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 32 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. If you describe yourself as an innovative thinker who thrives on being at the forefront of new and emerging technology, a computer and information systems security career might be the right one for you.
Methodology
Earning a bachelor’s degree is the first step to holding a position as a computer and information security systems analyst. To compile the following list of top undergraduate programs, we searched for online computer and information systems security bachelor’s degrees at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). We then narrowed down the initial pool of 50 colleges and universities into the top 40 schools based on the methodology. We awarded points based on three key metrics related to tuition, student-to-faculty ratios and graduation rates.
Average Cost of Attendance
While tuition is likely the first factor you look at in a program, it is important to also research what the school has to offer. After all, it is necessary to determine whether that institution will not only meet your needs financially but academically and professionally as well. Using information obtained by the NCES, we awarded points based on tuition rates for one academic year for in-state students. Tuition for out-of-state students is also provided for your reference.
Points:
Under $7,500: 5 points
$7,500 to $15,000: 3 points
$15,001 and above: 1 point
Student-to-Faculty Ratio
We also awarded points based on student-to-faculty ratios as these figures provide a glimpse into the learning environment at each school. For example, large public universities with high ratios may not necessarily foster close relationships between students and professors, while small private colleges with low ratios may provide more opportunities for mentoring and individualized studies. Therefore, we awarded the most points to schools with ratios of 10 or fewer students per faculty member, according to NCES.
Points:
10:1 or less: 3 points
11:1 to 15:1: 2 points
Greater than 15:1: 1 point
Graduation Rate
Our third and final metric, graduation rates, paint a picture of the success of a school’s students. In other words, schools with low graduation rates may be lacking in academic support, employing inexperienced faculty or offering unaffordable programs, causing students to leave and earn their degrees elsewhere. For this reason, we awarded the most points to colleges and universities with the highest graduation rates from NCES, as these institutions are keeping students satisfied with their academic experience and enrolled right through graduation.
Points
More than 50 percent: 3 points
Between 30 percent and 50 percent: 2 points
Less than 30 percent: 1 point
