Young adults who know early in life that they want a nursing career often ask what high school courses should be taken if they plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing. When asked by high school students, that question demonstrates someone who is committed to doing well in nursing school and being an asset to the nursing profession. Candidates who decide to enroll in nursing school later in life may not be able to go back to high school, but knowing what courses are beneficial can help them prepare for nursing school. Here are some high school courses that will help anyone pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
Science
Nursing school is very competitive, and students are often put on a waiting list. Being accepted into a good nursing program often comes down to the student who is the most qualified academically to meet the rigid requirements of the school. Students with a solid foundation in science often have the edge. Once the student is in an actual nursing program, the student will have to complete courses in anatomy and physiology. Having a good knowledge of chemistry, biology and physics prepare them for these college science classes. For a nurse to understand how our bodies interact with prescribed medications, they must have a good understanding of science courses. Many students choose to take Advanced Placement science classes.
Math Courses
Math is used in every area of our lives. We’d be hard-pressed to find even one area that doesn’t involve math in some shape or form, and the same goes for those pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Aspiring nursing students should take basic and advanced math courses. These should include basic math, algebra and geometry. Nurses throughout their day use math regularly. Algebra is used to help nurses figure the correct medication dosages. Math proficiency is not only important when working as a nurse but can also help applicants score well on nursing school and college admissions exams.
English
Aspiring nurses should take four years of English while in high school. Nursing schools also look highly on applicants who have completed a couple of years of a foreign language. Taking a speech class in high school can also be beneficial. Nurses spend a great deal of time communicating with patients, family members and medical personnel. They must have excellent communication skills to be able to communicate effectively. Getting good grades in these courses an also be helpful in the admissions process.
Additional Help
Candidates wishing to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing can do other things to improve their standing in the nursing school admissions process. These include completing a CPR/First Aid course and doing as much volunteer work as possible. The more volunteer work the candidate completes in a hospital or medical facility, the better it will look on their applications and resumes.
