Methodology
We know all too well how daunting of a task choosing the right school for an affordable urban studies degree can be. That’s why we decided to take it upon ourselves to make this list of the top schools. We factored in tuition rates, graduation rates, and student-to-faculty ratios to compile what we think are the best schools offering a Bachelor’s in Urban Studies. We used the search terms for “urban studies bachelor’s degree” at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to gather a list of schools. We then narrowed our list down from the initial pool of 200 to find the 50 top programs based on our methodology.
Average Cost of Attendance
First, we looked at the average cost of attendance for each institution. Keep in mind the quality and features of a program and try to avoid selecting a school simply based on cost alone. For this ranking, we awarded points for tuition based on the cost of one academic year for a full-time, in-state student using tuition rates provided by the NCES. Costs for out-of-state students are also provided for your reference.

Student-to-Faculty Ratio
Next, we awarded points based on each school’s student-to-faculty ratio. Although there are always exceptions, in most cases, colleges and universities with low ratios provide small class settings and are more likely to offer individualized studying, mentoring and the opportunity for students to develop face-to-face relationships with faculty. As a result, schools with the lowest student-to-faculty ratios as reported from NCES earned the most points in the following ranking.

Finally, we considered each institution’s graduation rate as a measure of student success and satisfaction. Again, there are exceptions, but typically, institutions with high graduation rates are keeping their students happy with their academic experience, whether that be through affordable programs, plenty of academic support or a nationally recognized faculty. As a result, students are more likely to remain enrolled and graduate with their degrees. For this reason, schools with the highest graduation rates from NCES received the most points as indicated below.
