Attending the best affordable Bachelor’s in Music Therapy degree programs lets you use your vocal or instrumental talents for helping people in need. Music therapy majors are trained to harness the healing powers of song in therapeutic settings. Since 1944, music schools have delivered this clinical-based degree to support clients with physical, emotional, or behavioral disorders. Music therapy gives people of all ages an outlet for expressing their thoughts and feelings. Listening to music also triggers the release of dopamine in the brain to feel happier. In 2013, American Psychological Association research found that music was more effective than prescription medicine at lowering anxiety. Nearly 97 percent of the surveyed patients would recommend music therapy to others. Therefore, there’s a growing demand for creative artists in this allied health profession. The American Music Therapy Association has more than 8,000 members in more than 30 global countries. It’s estimated that music therapists treat 1.6 million clients at 96,000 facilities per year. Cheap music therapy degree options are available to get you certified.
Our Methodology
Affordable Schools looked for low-cost music therapy degree programs that help treat health problems with soothing sounds. Our research began on the National Center for Education Statistics Department of Education’s College Navigator website. We browsed for U.S. four-year bachelor’s majors in the music therapy/therapist category. Our initial pool had 75 public and private accredited universities to review closer. Second, we exported the big list into a spreadsheet to compare 2018-19 tuition rates and double-checked them to the school’s individual websites. We zoomed in on the in-state attendance costs for full-time students taking 30 or more credits annually. Though not factored in, we recorded the out-of-state music therapy degree costs for your information. We graded each undergrad school with one to five points based on their affordability. Economical music therapy degree options charging $7,500 or less were prioritized.
Points:
Under $7,500 – 5 Points
$7,500 – $15,000 – 3 Points
$15,001 and above – 1 Point
Third, the AS Staff recorded student-faculty ratios at the affordable colleges for music therapy degree majors. The U.S. Department of Education defines student-faculty ratios as the entire undergrad class divided by the number of professors. For instance, a 15:1 ratio tells prospective students there are 15 peers for every teacher. Lower numbers indicate that there are smaller classes. Music therapy students benefit from small, engaging cohorts with plenty of faculty interaction. More one-on-one music lessons and interactive ensemble projects are better than huge lectures. Low student-faculty ratios suggest there will be less competition for teacher attention. Music therapy undergrads will form strong bonds with professors inside and outside class. Thus, we graded schools again based on student-faculty ratios. The maximum three points went to high-value music therapy degree programs with 10:1 or smaller ratios as reported by NCES.
Points:
10:1 or less – 3 Points
11:1 to 15:1 – 2 Points
Greater than 15:1 – 1 Point
Lastly, Affordable Schools sought out best-value music therapy degree options with good educational outcomes. We specifically recorded the average graduation rate from the NCES database. Graduation rates are defined as the percentage of students who earn their diploma in four to six years. Poor graduation rates below 30 percent can indicate a potential problem. More students are dropping out or transferring to other schools. Perhaps the academic or campus environment isn’t satisfactory. Maybe students become too overwhelmed with tuition to continue. Whatever the reason, bad completion rates are huge red flags. That’s why we prioritized high graduation rates that suggest high-quality learning. Our team searched for well-performing music therapy schools that successfully retain most freshmen. Up to three points were awarded for graduation rate. The totals were then tallied and the 50 biggest scorers were kept. Our best affordable bachelor’s in music therapy degree finalists were then profiled below.
Points:
Less than 30 percent – 1 Point
Between 30 percent and 50 percent – 2 Points
More than 50 percent – 3 Points
