The reasons for the under-representation vary, though lower average high school graduation rates and SAT/ACT scores, lack of family college history, and cost can be factors. What’s more, a second report indicates a similar situation in California, where the success of the Latinx/ Hispanic community is crucial to the success of the state’s economy.
However, despite the education hurdles of this community, the NCES (National Center for Education Statistics), predicts more than 40% growth between 2018 and 2021, inclusive, in Latinx/ Hispanic college students. In fact, since the end of 2011, this is the largest minority group in U.S. higher education. (References at end of this article.)
Like any group of students, the availability of online degree programs can be a boon if life/ work situations reduce study schedule flexibility. As such, we’ve put together a list of HSIs (Hispanic Serving Institutions) that offer online bachelor’s degree programs. The NCES defines an HSI as a college/ universities where Latinx/ Hispanic students make up at least 25% of the undergrad population. (Keep in mind that some colleges with a fluctuating percentage year to year may not be represented here but may otherwise qualify as an HSI.) Methodology for this college ranking of online degrees is given towards the end of the article.

Ranking Methodology
Using data from NCES (National Center for Education Statistics), we applied the following approach:
- Find all U.S. colleges/ universities indicated in NCES as offering “distance” bachelor’s programs. (NCES does not distinguish between distance and online programs.)
- Keep only those that are designated HSIs (Hispanic Serving Institutions). This is defined by NCES as an institution having at least 25% of undergrads who are of Hispanic/Latinx origin.
- Drop colleges below a 25% undergrad graduation rate.
- Manually verify and keep colleges that offer at least five online bachelor’s degree titles (plus any track/ concentration options as available). Degrees can be fully online, hybrid or blended).
- Sort the list on the basis of lowest net price, from least to most and select the first 25 colleges.
NOTE: NCES defines Net Price as the average yearly cost per undergrad student, including, tuition, fees, books, room and board, etc., for a given college/ university — which can change each academic year, and may be influenced by factors outside of the institution. Note: Actual cost for online students may differ based on living arrangements. Tuition is subject to change, and online programs/ courses may have fees or differences not applicable to on-campus equivalents.
