Starting and running a business is a dream for many Americans, but the first-year attrition rate for new small businesses is estimated to be as high as 60-80%, depending on the source of data. As well, the five-year attrition rate is estimated at 50% of businesses that made it past the first year. If you’re undaunted by the statistics, and being a business owner interests you, it may be worth taking a college program/ degree in entrepreneurship/ entrepreneurial studies, to increase your chances of success.
While there is no “entrepreneur” occupation listed in the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), there are profiles of numerous management/ executive roles, including median salary and jobs growth estimates for the 2014-2024 period. Graduates of college entrepreneurship degrees often defer launching a business and work first as an employee, for the experience.
If an entrepreneurial career interests you, then this guide may be of some value. In it, we present a comprehensive overview of accredited colleges and universities that offer entrepreneurial studies or related certificate/ diploma/ degree programs entirely or partly online.
We have done our best here to be comprehensive about online certificates, learning tracks, diploma and degree programs in entrepreneurship and related topics such as leadership, management, innovation, etc.
Notes:
- This guide is a work-in-progress. Check back soon for additional schools.
- Please note that while some colleges and universities represent a degree program as being online, they may require that examinations be taken in person either on campus or at a local/nearby testing center. We’ve tried to ensure that at least some courses and coursework can be completed online.
- Some private colleges may have national accreditation but not local/ regional accreditation or vice versa. Research your school selections before enrolling, to ensure that any credits earned can be transferred to another college in which you are interested.
- The listed “Net Cost/yr” value per school is the “yearly net average price.” NCES.ed.gov defines this net price as being the average cost of attendance of all students at that school for the latest reporting year (some colleges are behind). This includes an average of tuition minus financial aid granted, plus books, fees, room and board and other cost of living expenses, etc. For online programs, some of these costs may be alleviated, though in some cases, online tuition is higher than for the equivalent regular program.
- Some community colleges charge three different tuition rates: district/county, in-state, out-of-state — with the first being highest.
- We’ve included the state that each school listed is based in, to help you with your selection. Please note that due to state education regulations, you may not be able to take online programs for some schools. Check with the school in question. Usually, their Web site will indicate eligible or ineligible states.

Online Entrepreneurial Studies Degree Overview
Entrepreneurial studies are valuable to anyone wanting to either start and run their own business, or who want to play a similar role for existing businesses. While people do succeed in business without such studies, given the previously-mentioned statistics on business attrition rates, taking and completing a relevant program/ degree potentially increases the chances of success.
Online entrepreneurial studies degrees are offered from colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning at different education levels. The variety we’ve found so far includes certificates, diplomas, associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees.
Online Entrepreneurial Studies Certificate Programs
Certificates are either at the undergrad or graduate level and can often be applied towards a related degree. In some cases, they serve as a means to specialize a more general degree — such as business administration program. Certificates can also be used to supplement an existing degree — business/ entrepreneurial or otherwise. In the schools listed so far, we found certificates to be the most frequently occurring type of academic program.
Online Associate’s Degree in Entrepreneurial Studies
Associate’s degrees typically come in AA (Associate of Arts), AS (Associate of Science), AAS (Associate of Applied Science) flavors. In business/ entrepreneurial programs, there is also the AAB (Associate of Applied Business) and less frequently the ABA (Associate in Business Administration).
Associate’s degrees serve several purposes. Firstly, it allows students to gain skills and earn a degree in roughly two years (sometimes less for full-time, online programs) without having to commit to four years of study. Secondly, it gives students a taste of the curriculum, after which they may choose to enter a bachelor’s or even an advanced degree program after that. Most schools allow for credits earned in an associate’s degree program to be applied towards a bachelor’s degree. In fact, some schools actually insist on the completion of an associate’s degree before admission to a bachelor’s program.
Online Bachelor’s in Entrepreneurial Studies
As with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees come in many flavors, including BA (Bachelor of Arts), BS (Bachelor of Science), BAS (Bachelor of Applied Science). For business/ entrepreneurial programs, you will also see the BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) and occasionally the BABA (Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration) or the BSBA (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration), amongst others. This sort of letter more clearly defines the type of degree being earned. It also allows for the possibility of earning two bachelor’s degrees and avoiding the issue of having two BAs or BSes, etc.
While bachelor’s degree credits are not typically applicable towards an advanced degree such as a master’s, some schools do offer joint programs that reduce the total time of study and earn students two degrees.
Online Entrepreneurial Studies Master’s Degree
As with associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees come in several varieties. Most common are the MA (Master’s of Arts), MS (Master’s of Science) and fairly commonly in business, MBA (Master of Business Administration). The range of master’s programs in entrepreneurship/ entrepreneurial studies, in schools listed here to date, are primarily MBA programs with a specialization/ concentration in Entrepreneurship. Occasionally, a program also has a secondary focus, including Management, Innovation or Leadership. Of course, as an alternate to starting a business with the skills gained from a master’s degree is the potential to teach at the community college level, and occasionally for undergrad programs in college/ university.
Online Entrepreneurial Studies Doctoral Degree
Of the schools listed so far, we did not encounter any doctoral programs in entrepreneurial studies.
Entrepreneurial Studies Classes Online
Many colleges — especially community and technical colleges — do not explicitly offer “online degrees.” However, some may offer a selection of courses that covers most or even all of a program’s curriculum. In fact, one college referenced here had all courses of an entrepreneurial certificate available online (some semesters), yet did not list the program as being an “online certificate.” Given this knowledge, you might find many more schools that offer at least parts of an entrepreneurial curriculum online, if not officially.
